And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. – Philippians 1:6
I was reminded of this verse when, in David Roberts’ recent sermon, he brought out the profound truth that based on the length God was willing to go to reach us (to the point of sending his only Son to die a humiliating and agonizing death on a cross) we can be confident that He will not, in the end, allow anything to thwart His plan for our lives. When we put our faith, hope and trust in Jesus, not only is our salvation secure but so is our eventual holiness – no matter how slow the growth seems. And Timothy Keller reminds us that fruit grows slowly. Paul’s metaphor was intentional – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control take time.
We can’t generate these traits, but God can and does when we intentionally open ourselves to His work in our lives. One way we do this is by spending time in His word and by spending time with other Christians. I invite you to join us Sunday mornings for Sunday school. Spirit of Joy offers a number of classes that will help you open your life to the work of God as He continues His “good work within you”.
OPPORTUNITY – SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTS THIS WEEK: Our unit this fall in The Gospel Project adult class is “The God Who Changes Us”. We would love to have you join us.
